UL Cable, UL Listed Cable

What is UL Listed Cable?

UL Listed Cable refers to the electrical or data communication cables that have been tested, evaluated, and certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) to meet the specific safety standards.

Meaning of “Listed”

  • The term “Listed” means the complete, finished cable product (including its construction, materials, and ratings) has been rigorously tested by UL against applicable standards.
  • It is certified as safe for its intended use when installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and relevant electrical regulation.

Classification of UL Listed

  • Fire Safety:

Tests evaluate flame resistance, smoke density, and toxicity of fumes (e.g., for cables rated as CM, CMR, CMP for plenum spaces).

  • Electrical Safety:

Ensures proper insulation, voltage ratings, and current-carrying capacity to prevent shock or short circuits.

  • Mechanical Durability:

Assesses flexibility, crush resistance, and overall integrity.

  • Environmental Performance:

For some cables, resistance to moisture, sunlight, or chemicals may be evaluated.

  • Compliance with Standards:

The cable meets specific UL standards, for example, UL444 for communications cable, UL758 for appliance wiring cable.
